books

Publishing Tucann Books started in 1987, we work with authors to help them understand the process of having their book produced and how to market their book to get the most sales. We do not apologise for believing that authors should make a profit from their efforts, that is why many of our authors go on to have a second book or to reprint their titles. Because of this commercial attitude we are selective; it is important to us that there is a good reason as to why a book is published. It might be very well written and entertaining or the importance of the content is such that it should be in print.

Before printing we ensure as best we can that a book has commercial possibilities. Authors should always think about how they are going to sell their book before having it printed. Books do not sell themselves sitting in a box or under your bed.

  • Seven Short LivesAuthor: Steven Potter

When Steve Potter set out to find out what happened to his uncle, who his family believed was killed as a 'rooky' crew member in 1944. Books we believe have a life of their own as to where they lead. This one started to lay out it's path before it was written. The author found things laid out to be discovered and in some ways he just had to join the dots. A fitting explanation of what '000's of aircrew went through to win the peace that we know in Europe.

  • Motor Makers of Lincolnshire 1 & 2Author: Stephen Pullen

Stephen is renowned for his in-depth knowledge of motor manufacturing.  He recalls that the original idea for the books goes back to when he was a motor bike mad ten year old and realised that there had been a motor cycle manufacturer near where he lived, - the Lincoln Elk. While researching this company he stumbled upon a host of other manufacturers making lorries, cars etc. Lincolnshire steam engine makers have been well recorded in print and so Stephen thought it only right that the motor manufacturers should be documented.

  • To Fetch a Pail of Water • Author: Trevor Pacey

In the late 19th and early 20th century Lincoln expanded rapidly driven by the industrial revolution. This is where great engineering names came to the fore, Rustons, Fosters, etc. The increased population caused problems with the balance of sewage and water supply which inevitably caused an outbreak of typhoid in late 1904/5. The search was on for a safe source of water, and this was found to be a bore at Elkesley some 22 miles away in Nottinghamshire. 'To fetch a Pail of Water' was written by Trevor Pacey, a retired Operations Manager for the Lincoln Area of Anglian Water. The book charts the provision of drinking water from Roman times, through the devastation and lack of confidence of the supply to celebrate 100 years of safe water in Lincoln, October 1911 when the Elkesley water was turned on to the present day. Profits from the book will go to Water Aid, a charity dedicated to providing safe water in developing countries. 164 pages, very well illustrated with early photographs and diagrams A5 perfect bound with a laminated cover.

  • Taboos, Troubles and TrustsAuthor: Rob Bradley

Lincoln City is an old club which probably came to national prominence when financial problems overtook it and the solution was greater fans participation and the supporters trust being given a place on the board. Rob Bradley was the man behind the trust and was it's first Chairman. He became Chairman of the football club board.  With this background the reader can understand that Rob knows all sides of football at this level, the politics, intrigue and passion and as such is well placed to write this as fiction.

  • Chasing Von Lettow-Vorbeck • Author: Sergeant Harold Downs D.C.M.

During the Great War, the fighting in East Africa was hardly reported at all and today it is almost entirely forgotten. It has been described as a sideshow, a poor relation to the bloody conflict of the Western Front, but the British army alone lost almost 10,000 men in the East African theatre. The fighting was vicious and the conditions were unbelievably hard. Food, water and supplies were almost non-existent and many regiments were virtually missing for many months.

A young man by the name of Harold Downs found himself whisked from the streets of Hull to the fighting of East Africa and this book tells his story, in his own words. His original manuscript has been dusted off, transcribed and published for the first time since it was written. He tells a fascinating story, including how his Douglas motorcycle was destroyed by fire, leaving him stranded, alone, at night, in Lion Country or how the roads were so bad that it often took three days to travel just one mile.

  • Lincoln's Medieval Jewry and up-hill Norman Houses • Author: Maureen Birch

In the early medieval period Lincoln was home to a large Jewish community.  They played a substantive role in the prosperity of the city during that period, under increasingly prohibitive regulation, until the time of their expulsion in 1290.  In this book Maureen Birch examines the influence of that community, how they worked and worshipped, the houses that they inhabited and some of the legends and traditions associated with them and those times.  The development and history of those buildings that were vacated by the Jewish community upon expulsion, which are the most visible legacy left to us from them, is also charted.  A wealth of maps, illustrations and photographs are included to support this engaging study of Lincoln’s Medieval Jewry and up-hill Norman Houses.
